Wild year of the online editorial staff

Blog

Although creating a new online service requires an enormous technical effort, the creation of Job Market Finland has not only been in the hands of coders and definers. In this blog, the online editorial staff is holding the pen – we who have created the information content and illustrations you can find on Job Market Finland.

In fact, our work began exactly a year ago when we first met in Tampere to plan future content. That was the beginning of a wild year, with plenty of challenges and successes.

It was not an easy task: we had eight months to create a cohesive collection of information content about the various stages and perspectives of working life. A group of creative and enthusiastic officials from the KEHA Centre was selected for the task. The work has not only consisted of writing but also creating the structure of content, reflecting customers' thoughts, checking facts, getting translations and even taking photographs suitable for the topics. All the work has been guided by our key policies: we want to use the language of our customers, avoid overly rigid and bureaucratic text and thus approach online content produced by a public actor from a slightly new perspective.

The different situations, details and varied legislation of working life have made the production of information content undeniably challenging, but we have maintained our principle: the customer's word is our "law". At the same time, we have received brilliant comments on our information content from several of our colleagues working in the agency. We have also asked you, the readers, for opinions on issues such as which terms and which types of content structures are the easiest to understand.

We have done a lot of work on all this in virtual meetings, in front of laptops and wearing headsets, but since the members of the online editorial staff live all over Finland, we have also made it a habit to get together to work on online content. During our shared working days, we work on content that has proven especially challenging and plan for the future.

We also review customer feedback and user survey results slightly more thoroughly.  We want to make Job Market a service that supports you throughout your life – before, during and after your most active career as an employee or employer.

The last few weeks before the publication of the new trial version of Job Market were undeniably busy. The latest content was still being written and entered into the online service, translations were taken care of, facts were elaborated and photographs were selected. On the day of publication in September, we were tired but very happy. However, our work did not end there; after a short break, we continued working on content. After going live, we have used customer feedback and statistics to develop the material. New content is on its way, and this year we are going to focus especially on producing topical content. In addition, the integration of services and content will be improved.

All in all, our year has been full of hard work and many emotions. At times, the work has been so stressful that we have had to balance it with some pretty wild jokes. At times, we have wondered whether our jokes are too out there for the agency, but perhaps creativity and a cheerful outlook are the ships that carry us from shore to shore on our journey of working life knowledge.

Hopefully, you have also found information and services that make your situation easier at Job Market!

We wish you a wonderful year 2020!
