Guest blogger: World after coronavirus: digital technology as a natural part of work

Blog

For years, we have talked about digital leaps and steered the society gradually closer towards a modern digital entity operating on the platform economy. Different parts of this entity include banking services, office services, health services and countless other services in the public and private sector.

This development has been accelerated by improvements in information security solutions and the way people use online services; mobile devices with fast connections are now available to almost everyone. In other words, it is natural that work and employment services now mainly take place online and generate new services.

The basics of how we work are in turmoil

Until as recently as 15 years ago, work was carried out in traditional employment relationships: either fixed-term or so-called permanent jobs. Agreements were made between the traditional parties of employer and employee.

With global development and more efficient work, employment has become fragmented in many fields, and the need for various short-term micro jobs has increased. On the other side of the coin, there have been the slowly changing labour market, systems and legislation in Finland. Nonetheless, we have taken tentative steps towards new ways of working.

As a result of the coronavirus crisis, we have no longer been able to follow a prudent path. Instead, we have been thrown in at the deep end to survive with digital and remote work within a time frame of just a few weeks. Fortunately, the groundwork has been done well. After the coronavirus crisis, Finland will have a great opportunity to grab work by the horns and take advantage of the digital possibilities.

New services for new forms of work

Finland has of a lot of workforce and plenty of work, but they do not always meet due to many different factors. New types of commissioning services have now been developed and put on the market. These include the Poseidon.works of 4works Oy, which uses artificial intelligence to combine assignments with potential workers, if the terms and conditions on both sides are met. As a result, the traditional intermediaries of employment services are removed, and work and potential employees can be combined easily and reliably.

There are limitless possibilities to create new interesting assignments, such as “order a celebrity to sing a private birthday song through remote connections” or post your assignment as a housing company and employ young people living nearby to mow your lawn in the summer. The service takes care of all bureaucracy on your behalf – the client only has to pay the invoice sent by the worker after the assignment has been completed.
